Space Crew Announced

Since the 1930s, Russia has made great discoveries and reached historical milestones with their space program. Amongst the country's notable achievements are Sputnik 1 (the first satellite), Laika the dog that entered space on Sputnik 2, and putting the first human into space, Yuri Gagarin. The Russians also laid claim to the first space station, and just recently the 24th crew was announced who to travel to the International Space Station. The announcement was made in Moscow on Monday, 14 June 2010, and final preparations are currently underway for this magnificent adventure.


The Sapsan – Russia’s First High Speed Train

Rail transport provides an essential and cost effective way for visitors and locals to travel in Russia, which stretches across seven time zones, and the country’s bottle-green trains are a common sight wherever you go. December 2009 saw Russia enter the realms of high-tech rail travel with the introduction of the sleek red and silver high-speed train which is set to travel between the country’s two main cities – Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The train has been named the Sapsan, meaning peregrine falcon and no doubt a reference to its immense speed.


Valentin Sidorov Exhibition

Valentin Sidorov is one of the most celebrated artists in Russia today. Born in 1928 in the village of Sorokopenie, Sidorov has always had a deeper understanding of the beauty and magnificence of nature in his heart. His family moved to Moscow in 1936 and Sidorov furthered his studies at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture between the years of 1948 and 1952. Now celebrating his eightieth birthday, the Tretyakov Gallery is hosting an exclusive exhibition to honor him, and can be visited until the 14th of December 2008.

Russia has succeeded beyond expectation at the Beijing Olympics. Their athletes have excelled in their divisions and have afforded Russia the honor of taking home a total of twenty-three gold medals, twenty-one silver medals and twenty-eight bronze medals. It is a magnificent achievement for the country, showing their dominance throughout the running of the Beijing Olympics. With a breathtaking 2008 Olympic campaign behind them, they will most definitely be working hard to achieve even more success, directing their focus on the next Olympic Games.

Ownership of Land in Biblical Town of Jericho Returned to Russia

At a recent ceremony in Moscow, Russia, the ownership deed for a piece of land situated in the town of Jericho, Palestine, which had once belonged to Russian tsars, was handed over to the head of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society, thereby handing the land back to Russia. Hassan Saleh, the mayor of Jericho handed over the document to Sergey Stepashin during a ceremony which both parties see as having far-reaching significance.
