Eighth International Winter Festival Arts Square

The very first International Winter Festival Arts Square was held in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1999. Its magnificent success has led to the Eighth International Winter Festival Arts Square that will start on 28 December 2007 and end on 7 January 2008.

The artistic director for this year’s festival is Maestro Yuri Temirkanov and after postponement of the 2006 festival, due to renovations being done on the Grand Hall of the Philharmonia, the hype surrounding the Eighth International Winter Festival Arts Square is growing by the day. It is one of the most popular festival attractions in Russia and tickets to the event in St. Petersburg are selling fast.

Carlo Rossi, an Italian architect, designed the magnificent square that hosts the International Winter Festival, and it is truly home to the arts and culture of Russia. The Ethnographic Museum, the St. Petersburg Philharmonia, the Mussorgsky Theater, the Grand Hotel Europe and the State Russian Museum are all located at the square. And looking down on all the significant establishments on the square is the Alexandre Pushkin monument. The festival is a celebration to honor the founding of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra 125 years ago and the St. Petersburg Symphonic Orchestra that celebrates its 75th anniversary. Of the many compositions that were specifically written for the Philharmonic Orchestra, the Triumphal Overture of Glazunoy was selected to be performed.

On the opening of the festival, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and Symphony No.1, plus Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. The festival is not just devoted to music, as on the 29th of December 2007 and the 4th of January 2008, magical evenings of ballet will be showcased. The New Year’s Eve Concert is one of the main events of the festival, as the New Years’ Eve Ball is held in the Yusupov Palace. The palace is famously known throughout the world, as it is the location where the legendary Rusputin met his murderous death in the year 1916. The St. Petersburg Symphonic Orchestra will be entertaining the attendees during the evening under the skillful guidance of Maestro Alexander Dmitriev.

On the 7th of January 2008, the festival will come to a climatic end with performances from the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and guest artists. The Eighth International Winter Festival Arts Square is a wonderful event of entertainment, music and the arts, that should be attended by visitors who find themselves in St. Petersburg during the holiday season.
