Fantastic Shopping in Moscow

The GUM department store in Moscow, Russia, is a historical building that served many purposes before becoming the centre of modern fashion and lifestyle accessories. Its design and interior are breathtaking and can be described as a work of art. But after visitors have gotten over the sheer magnificence of the building, their attention is quickly drawn to the shops and stores that await them in this three storey shopping paradise.

Located on the Red Square, the GUM department store takes up most of the eastern side of the square. It was constructed in the years 1890 to 1893 and exhibits an array of elaborate steel work, medieval architectural styles and an awe inspiring glass roof. It was a building that accommodated trade, markets and shops, but was taken over by the Stalin committee to use as office space in 1928. In 1932, Stalin’s wife, Nadezhda, committed suicide. She was displayed in the GUM building, together with photographs, propaganda materials and other banners and media used in the Red Square at the time.

In 1953, the GUM building was returned to operate as a department store, and by the end of the Soviet era, the store had become privatized. Today, it is home to approximately two hundred stores, and has become a popular tourist attraction. Inside, visitors will be able to find internationally known brands such as Estee Lauder, Christian Dior, Levi, Steilmann and Kristi. Recommended confectionaries, such Red October Chocolates (Krasny Oktyobr), are a must for visitors to the GUM center. Some stores can accept credit cards and travelers checks, but tourists are advised to carry Russian currency in cash, to ensure that they will be able to purchase something at any store.

Visitors will also be able to learn about the history of the building and its many uses before becoming one of the most famous attractions in Russia. It is a perfect blend of heritage, architecture and modern luxury that attracts more than three hundred thousand shoppers a day. As an attraction in Moscow, it is highly rated, as it gives visitors the opportunity to see, shop and taste Russia. And always remember to carry a camera, as the interior and exterior wonder of the building is far too magnificent to miss out on.
