Fantastic Skiing at Mount Cheget

Mount Tcheget, more commonly known as Cheget, is one of Russia’s largest ski areas. Already popular with Russian snow skiers, Cheget is becoming increasingly popular among international snow skiing enthusiasts who are looking for something different. Mount Cheget is situated about 200 kilometers from the Chechan border, close to Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe.

The Cheget ski area offers three double chair ski lifts and two drag lifts. The double chair lift has two stages, with the first rising to the station of Ai at a change in altitude of 650 meters with a 1,6 kilometer descent. The total length of the eight ski runs is approximately 16 kilometers, with the longest being a length of 2.5 kilometers.

Mount Cheget is considered by many experienced skiers to be an excellence place for freeride and backcountry snow skiing, with some of the areas offering intermediate and advanced skiers diverse terrain to test their snow skiing skills on. After thirty minutes of backcountry from the top of the lift, skiers will reach the North and South Circuses which, with the assistance of local guides, opens up a wealth of snow skiing opportunities of forested areas, steep descents and snowfields – as well as awe-inspiring views of the surroundings.

Excellent snow skiing conditions prevail at Mount Cheget from December through to April and possibly even into May. Heli-skiing is available for those who want a challenge off the beaten track, however due to wind conditions, heli-skiing is best in March and April and is only available during the other months if wind conditions are favorable.

The nearby town of Prielbrusye has a number of hotels, as well as two resorts and some mountain huts. Many skiers choose to make this home base, allowing them to take advantage of the excellent snow skiing conditions available at Mount Cheget and take a trip to Mount Elbrus as well. Reportedly the hospitality, food and facilities in Prielbrusye are of a high quality and very reasonably priced.

With the rugged beauty and challenging terrain, skiers who have traveled from far and wide to Mount Cheget generally agree that the skiing in this exquisite area of Russia is an unforgettable experience.
