Host of 2016 IIHF World Championship

The International Ice Hockey Federation is responsible for the organizing of the Ice Hockey World Championships. The federation was established in 1908. In 1910 the European Championships were hosted, while the tournament was only recognized as an official event in 1920, during the Summer Olympics. The IIHF World Championship was held as an independent event for the first time in 1930. There are now different divisions to the championships and it usually feature approximately sixteen teams that participate in the tournament. With each event the venue changes, and for the upcoming 2016 IIHF World Championships the tournament will be hosted in Russia.

Three countries tendered for the position of being host to the 2016 IIHF World Championship, but with Ukraine and Denmark withdrawing from the tender, the world championship will now fall to Russia. It will be a landmark event for the country. With the event being hosted in 2016, it will fall on the seventieth anniversary of ice hockey in Russia. Vladislav Tretya, the president of the Russian Hockey Federation, commented that they were going to base the organization of the 2016 IIHF World Federation Championship on other world class events they had hosted in the past. The budget will not be increased, as they already have two ideal locations, and will be using the money on finalizing the smaller details for the event. In Moscow, the Khodynka Arena is able to accommodate thirteen thousand five hundred spectators, while the St Petersburg Ice Palace offers seating for just over twelve thousand fans. The Moscow arena will be used as the main arena.

In regard to foreign visitors, the Deputy Minister of Sports, Tourism and Youth, Yuri Nagomykh, has confirmed that visa procedures will not be as strict for this time period, with visa-free discussions on the table for ice hockey spectators. The 2016 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship will be taking place between the 29th of April and 15th of May 2016, and fans can make their arrangements so long to ensure they do not miss this epic battle between the world’s best ice hockey teams.
