Khabarovsk - A Blend of Culture and Industry
Located in the Far East region of Russia near the border of neighboring China, the city of Khabarovsk is an important industrial, commercial and transport center in the region. Lying on the route of the Trans-Siberian Railway, with many historic sites to explore and being rich in culture, Khabarovsk is also a popular tourist destination. The extensive waterways are used for transportation of goods and passengers and the Khabarovsk Novy Airport accommodates international flights to and from destinations such as Europe, South Korea, Central Asia and China.
Although Khabarovsk is very industrialized, with up to three quarters of the population being employed by industry, city authorities have made sure that there are a number of recreational parks and gardens scattered throughout the city for city-dwellers and visitors to enjoy. Moreover, lush forests border the city, so nature is never too far away. Nature enthusiasts will enjoy the Boshehehtsirsky Reserve, while sites such as Fortress, the group of archeological monuments on Suchu Island, the rock paintings located on the Kiya River, rock carvings by the Maya River, the Tyr Temples and the Sikhachi-Alyan Petroglyphs are all noteworthy.
The Regional Lore Museum features rare exhibits like that of the Steller cow skeleton. Another popular attraction is the Art Museum, which has a stunning collection of ancient Russian icons. After you've seen these two gems, there are numerous theatres, cinemas and stadiums where you can while away your time. Sports clubs and playgrounds also abound and make for a great way to unwind after a long day. Central Stadium, which was opened in 1957, is the largest in the Far East and is Khabarovsk's main claim to fame. The Amursky Boulevard has numerous shops and is a great place to spend an afternoon. You can also take a walking tour from Lenin Square to Utes where you will find Russian cuisine restaurants and souvenir shops, while night clubs, pubs and restaurants keep the chill off the cold Russian nights.
So whether you are visiting Khabarovsk for business, for fun or to visit family already living here, you can be sure that you will have an enjoyable time exploring the many recreational and cultural facilities to be found in this lovely Russian city.
