The Great Talent of Russian Actors and Actresses

The Russian film industry has long been progressing at a steady rate and while subject or film quality may not always be the same as that produced in the United States or the United Kingdom, films produced here have always enjoyed a high level of quality and a uniquely Russian feel. In the beginning, Russia enjoyed the same ‘silent movie’ period that many other countries experienced, but as sound became better and more available the film industry gradually turned towards this sort of film. Thus, a number of Russian actors and actresses worked exclusively in the silent movie industry while others worked with both silence and sound. Those actors who have only recently entered the acting world usually work only with the latest technology and enjoy full-color, digital sound screenings.

In the beginning it was often hard to get a career in film off to a good start. A number of Russian actors and actresses immigrated to the United States where the film industry was more settled. They lived and worked in Hollywood, many doing both stage and film work during that time. Thus a number of these actors enjoyed international fame since they not only enjoyed acclaim in the United States but also in their homeland. Some of the older well-known actors and actresses include Mischa Auer, Olga Vladimirovna Baklanova, Tatiana Vasiljevna Doronina, Nikolai Fomenko, Igor Vladimirovich Ilyinsky and Evgeniya Konstantinovna Glushenko.

In more recent times a number of new Russian film stars have emerged on the big screen. Oskana Akinshina first gained recognition when she was nominated for best actress at the 2002 European Movie Awards for her well known role in "Lilya 4-ever". On a more international scale, many would recognize her from her role in "The Bourne Identity" and "The Bourne Supremacy". Natalya Sergeyevna Bondarchu is best known for her role as Hari in "Solaris", while Dina Korzun is often considered to be the most famous Russian actress to date. More recent notables include Zhanna Friske and Anton Yelchin. Friske is a Russian actress and singer who started her career as a member of the girl group Blestyashchie. She soon started singing solo and modeling, and before long got involved in acting. Her latest roles include the "Night Watch" trilogy, which is based on the novel by Sergey Lukyanenko and has just enjoyed international release. Anton Yelchin is another Russian actor who has made it big in the film industry, though he is known as an American actor. He has enjoyed roles in moves such as "Along Came a Spider" and "Hearts in Atlantis" and the "House of D". Clearly Russia is home to more than a few great Russian actors and actresses and you can be sure that more will follow.
