Human Rights Envoy Says Satisfied with Prosecutors' Work in Chechnya

RIA-Novosti - The Russian President's human rights commissioner in Chechnya Vladimir Kalamanov said at a news conference in Moscow on Tuesday that all investigations of human rights violations against citizens are under his control.

According to Kalamanov, the other day he discussed the process of investigations of all incidents connected with servicemen with representatives of the Chechen prosecutor's office while observers from the Council of Europe attended.

Kalamanov noted that he was "satisfied with the actions of the prosecutor's office." He said that if the guilt of servicemen is proven, all of them will be punished. The commissioner also said that on July 27 the prosecutor's office filed charges against the officer who headed the id check at the hospital in the village of Kurchaloi, as a result of which eight persons were taken away to an unknown destination. The officer is accused of exceeding his authority and aggravating circumstances.

Kalamanov is also satisfied with the process of the investigation into the incidents in Sernovodsk and Assinovskaya. According to him, about thirty prosecutors and investigators are engaged in the investigation. All the witnesses have been heard - servicemen and local inhabitants. Kalamanov added that some servicemen have been detained as a result. br>
Kalamanov is also confident that the criminal case launched in connection with the shelling of the village of Novye Nikaly, when six inhabitants and six servicemen were killed, will be successfully concluded. Kalamanov also said that "both the civil and military prosecutor's offices are working brilliantly." The prosecutor's office is open for citizens round the clock, he said.
