Russian Snowboarding Adventures

For many people the thought of Russia conjures up images of vast, snowy peaks and immense cold, and in the winter time that wouldn't be far from the truth. However, this is not a bad thing. The amazing snowfall in Russia also provides some amazing sporting opportunities. Snowboarding is by far one of the most popular winter sports, especially amongst younger adventurers.

Mount Elbrus is rated by Russians as Europe's highest peak. It has reaches a height of 5,633m (18,476 ft), which means that it has great quality snow regardless of the season. There is a working cable car which reaches the highest station in three phases, allowing for a fantastic 2 km downhill run. If this isn't high enough for you, however, you can also arrange for some "heli-boarding", being dropped off by a helicopter from the highest point possible or on more unused peaks. Unfortunately Mount Elbrus is also very popular, which means that you may have to wait in the busy seasons.

Another great place to go snowboarding is the Volen Sport Park just outside of Moscow. It has well developed facilities and great slopes. There are 6 different inclines with elevators and they can be as long as 400 meters. The Sport Park also offers eating facilities, cabins and equipment hire at fairly decent rates. The Park is also open 24 hours a day, which means that you will always be able to find help, no matter what time of day. However, Volen Sport Park is a seasonal affair and there is only usually good snow between mid December and mid March. For this reason, it would be best to plan a trip here ahead of time.
