Discover the beauty of Ekaterinburg

Situated on the eastern side of the Ural Mountains on the Iset river, Ekaterinburg is a surprisingly beautiful city. This Russian jewel is surrounded by the forests of the taiga and many small lakes which only add to its beauty. Winter here is long and cold, but this does not detract from the city's appeal as Ekaterinburg is one of the biggest cultural centers in Russia. This means it has many museums, theaters and cinemas which help take the chill out of even the coldest winter day. Ekaterinburg is also the biggest Russian industrial center and it sees a lot of international business and tourists. Ekaterinburg is also known as Yekaterinburg.

Ekaterinburg started life as a mining plant, factory and small town. The location was chosen for its proximity to wood, water and ore which were in great demand at the time. Though it took a long time to approve the building of a plant and factory here, the city was eventually founded in 1723 and was named after Ekaterina, Peter the Great's wife. It wasn't long before this small mining plant grew into a burgeoning city. In the nineteenth century gold was found, the platinum and then eventually diamonds. Ekaterinburg gained major significance in the eyes of the world due to these discoveries. By the end of the eighteenth century, the place had turned from a small mining town into an industrial town with a railroad, banks, schools and a theater.

Today what started as a simple mining plant is a beautiful city with a population of about 1.5 million people. There are roads, trams, trolley, bus routes and a subway, as well as numerous schools, higher education institutions and a medical institute. Ekaterinburg has nine local TV channels and many more radio stations. There are six theaters, a circus, four stadiums and numerous concert halls and museums as well as over 600 libraries. Truly Ekaterinburg has become a cultural epicenter for not only the Urals but also much of Russia.

If you have the opportunity to visit Ekaterinburg, you should make sure you stop by Kamenniye Palatki and Shartash Lake. The rocks of Kamenniye Palatki are completely natural though they look like the remains of an old castle. The lake is incredibly beautiful and is favored as a leisure spot. The Verkh-Isetski Pont is very popular for yachting and swimming while the Europe-Asia border obelisk is nationally renowned for its unusualness. We also highly recommend that you take in some theater or visit some of the museums. Whether you are visiting for business or pleasure, you can be sure the Ekaterinburg will proved to be every bit enjoyable as it is pretty.

This article is good, but don't forget the Europe/Asia border and the Ganina Yama - where the tsar and his family were murdered. Great city!
