There is a sense of examining how we got to where we are with our understanding of war in 1941 and where we were to go with it into the future. And its the prospects for the future that make major conflicts so exciting and the thing I had forgotten through not having been to one for more than a few years now. There is that sense of being led not just to the cutting edge of battle but encouraged to peer over that edge at what might be coming next. While the view of the near future might not always be perfectly clear, one thing that few if any would deny is that the cutting edge of the Blitzkrieg has moved a long way from the school or even undergraduate, military textbook version. A very long way.

For months it didn't rain at all. The earth cracked, trees drooped, desiccated plants collapsed on the hot ground. Day after day the remorseless sun beat down, bleaching every molecule of moisture from the parched garden of the steppe. We milked each passing cloud with prayers for rain, tried to read impending precipitation into the behaviour of the birds in the ravine and the old lady sotesayer from the neighbourhood east of Kiev. When the rain finally began, the earth literally exploded with relief as the Crusading legions ground to a halt and our worste fears fell upon us with a swift blow. The sweet smell of the long sought drops of rain carries up to us a boding, an omened sense that all was not well.
