Beaucoup de ces monastères étaient de puissantes forteresses s'inscrivant dans le système défensif des frontières septentrionales de la Russie.Le monastère de Kirillo-Biélozersk (Kirillo-Biélozerskiï monastyr), très bien conservé, souvent dénommé monastère de Saint Cyrille-sur-le-lac-Blanc, car son nom fait référence à Biélozersk qui se trouve sur le lac Blanc, a été fondé au XIVe siècle à proximité de la ville de Kirillov sur le territoire de la Principauté de Biélozersk en 1397 par Cyrille, un moine exceptionnellement pieux nommé à l'époque archimandrite du monastère Saint-Siméon de Moscou.
