Captain Henry « Lacy » Smith [07:14]
Captain Henry Smith, who died in battle at age 27, was buried in the presence of his family, the Australian Minister of Veterans Affairs and the Chief of Staff of the Australian Air Force. A tribute was paid to him during a religious ceremony and military on Tuesday afternoon, the military cemetery at Ranville, nearly 67 after his disappearance. From the neighborhood of Sans Souci in Sydney, he was hit by German anti-aircraft fire June 11, 1944. It would have attempted a landing in the Bay of Sallenelles, near Ouistreham, but the plane, too heavy, sank. According to the findings of the wreckage, the young driver would be drowned in the cockpit where he could not escape before sinking. In November 2010, his Spitfire was discovered in the mud and salvaged by a private collector. But State services have found this bailout illegal and ordered the release of water from the unit in the basin of the port of Caen. The remains of the pilot were recovered to give him a decent burial. Captain Smith is now at Ranville cemetery which has 2150 graves of British soldiers, 330 German graves and now, two graves of Australian soldiers. The Spitfire will soon be bailed out again to join Australia.
