I found these unpublished notes in a rubbish bin in a hotel room. It was in Samara, maybe. They are strangely moving: "She stood at the basin in the corner of the room and then when she was finished she turned around, noticing me watching her for the first time. I suddenly glimpsed her as she receded -- towards that second place, that second part of herself, wherever it might be. It was as if she was always vanishing into thin air and leaving us only a small part of herself. At that moment I realized there were in fact two of her: the one who lived unnoticed and unobserved, and the other who people saw. I finally grasped that space was not only outside people, it was also within them, a distance between two different places in someone's character. The unnoticed woman was the one I often saw on the trains -- she dressed in bright, tight-fitting tracksuit pants that clung to her buttocks and a t-shirt and a pair of worn sandals. She was at home. The observed one was made-up with bright colors, she was slightly dismissive of people and secreted a gentle scent of musk perfume that filled with longing every male who passed her on the street. I saw the longing on their faces. No one was immune. They turned their heads and stared at her, trying to decide whether she was beautiful or plain, for (and that was the other thing I noticed when she stood at the basin applying her make-up) I noticed she could be both."
