KIng Salmon (audio slide show) [03:19]
by rbth.ru At the Northeast of the Kamchatka peninsula, there is no way of life—just a way of survival. The area is frost-free on average only 90-95 days per year and the place is known for its intense winds, bringing Arctic cold reinforced by Pacific storms... The population consists mainly of native Chukchi and Evenki who are engaged primarily in reindeer herding, fishing and hunting, and growing vegetables in greenhouses. Most action takes place nearby the village of Achayvayam. It has no overland connection to the outside world. It is 251 km (156 miles) by air from Achaivayam to the administrative center. The distance to regional center of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is 1305 km (810 mile). The main reason for choosing to live in such a distant and harsh place is the presence of a valuable food resource -- The Apuka River, rich with various types of salmon.
