Fire and Ice (for Andrea Bocelli) [14:56]
I lost my home and children after the California wildfire, but God opened a door for me to Russia, to teach English, write, and take photographs--in winter. During my first lonely Christmas when no one in Russia celebrates, from my eighth-floor apartment building, I opened my computer like a window and followed a Facebook trail to Andrea Bocelli singing "The Lord's Prayer." The words comforted me, and this is my true story of surviving great loss and crossing from death to life. I narrate the tale in my own voice and match the words to my photographs of fire and ice, California and Russia. Special thanks to my daughter Jessica Ruth Williams for her self-portrait photo and photo of her brother Jonathan sitting atop the mountain ledge. Thanks also to my cousin Larry Petrillo for his "icicle window" photo and to my son Ryan for capturing Jessica, me, and Jonathan with his cell phone camera. And so much thanks to the Crest Forest Fire Department of California for the up-close fire photos (the red ones).
