Russia in New York - Brighton Beach [05:11]
View the Google Map of Russia in New York: g.co On the southern outskirts of Brooklyn, just down the boardwalk from Coney Island, the peaceful ocean waves once drew waves of immigrants from a tumultuous past. Refugees from the former Soviet Union. After the Cold War ended in the '90s, an influx of Russians settled on the shores of the city. Brighton Beach, nicknamed Little Odessa after the Ukrainian city on the Black Sea, boasts the largest Russian-speaking population in the United States. Here, you may feel you need a translator, or a tour guide, like Dave Garbarskiy. Onward down Brighton Beach Avenue, at M & I International Food, locals stock up on fresh-made breads and other provisions. While there, also sample Russian-style eats like cured cold cuts, variations of pickled fish, and Pir-oj-ki: fried pastries with either a savory or a sweet-filled center. Fresh apricot or mango juices often accompany meals at cafes, and you can sample a variety of dishes for under ten dollars. Of course everyone in Russia needs a fur coat, and maybe a fox fur hat, as warm as they are stylish. Luckily, David's uncle owns a store down the street! When you commit to long train rides to the outskirts of New York City, you'll be amazed by the things you discover. It's not necessarily that Brighton Beach looks like Russia - it looks like any other neighborhood in Brooklyn. What makes it Russian is the people you meet, the sound of the language and the music in the streets, the foods you get ...

Changing of the Guard, Moscow, 20 October 2011 [01:32]
I shot this video just outside the Red Square at the Eternal Flame memorial to the people of Russia who died in World War II. The guide told us that 30 million Russians died touching every family in Russia. As the video ends you will see a series of red granite "boxes". These monuments to the "Hero Cities" of Russia, cities remembered for their heroism during the war. The first box is the monument to Leningrad, cut off from world for 900 days. The Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place every 30 minutes just outside Red Square.

Soviet National Anthem - Гимн СССР - High Quality [03:38]
Lyrics - Unbreakable Union of freeborn Republics, Great Russia has welded forever to stand. Created in struggle by will of the people, United and mighty, our Soviet land! Sing to the Motherland, home of the free, Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong. O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people, To Communism's triumph lead us on! Through tempests the sunrays of freedom have cheered us, Along the new path where great Lenin did lead. To a righteous cause he raised up the peoples, Inspired them to labour and valourous deed. Sing to the Motherland, home of the free, Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong. O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people, To Communism's triumph lead us on! In the victory of Communism's immortal ideal, We see the future of our dear land. And to her fluttering scarlet banner, Selflessly true we always shall stand! Sing to the Motherland, home of the free, Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong. O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people, To Communism's triumph lead us on!

prayer.mp4 [00:38]
Millions of Russian Muslims are celebrating Eid ul-Fitr on Tuesday, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. In Moscow and St. Petersburg mosques were not able to accommodate all worshippers, so people poured into streets and lanes. See photo report about the celebration in RT Galleries. The holiday, which is better known as Uraza-Bayram in Russia, offers the faithful space to reflect on daily responsibilities and find the strength to face them, Ravil Gainutdin, the chair of the Russian Council of Muftis, said. "We have new challenges ahead, which we must overcome firmly, patiently and with dignity," he suggested. The celebration caused some disruption of normal life in a few larger Russian cities, which have had trouble keeping pace with the rapid growth in their Muslim populations, leaving them without enough mosques to accommodate the faithful. The solution has been to allow the people to pray right outside in the street, despite the disapproval of some residents. Moscow's mosques hosted 90000 worshipers, with some 50000 gathering in the biggest one in the city's center. This year, Moscow's municipal authorities opened a large exhibition center for the Muslims to visit and pray, but the novelty proved not as popular as had been hoped. Still, thousands of worshippers who found no room inside prayed around the mosques, laying down their mats on the concrete. The situation in St. Petersburg developed in a similar fashion, with different sources reporting between ...
