VOLCANOS part 4 - ΥΦΑΙΣΤΕΙΑ ( ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟΙ ΥΠΟΤΙΤΛΟΙ) [15:09]
Ηφαίστειο είναι η ανοιχτή δίοδος από το εσωτερικό της Γης (ή άλλου γεωειδούς ουράνιου σώματος) που επιτρέπει την εκροή ή έκρηξη ρευστών πετρωμάτων και αερίων από το εσωτερικό (μανδύας) στην επιφάνεια του στερεού φλοιoύ με την μορφή λάβας. Η δραστηριότητα αυτή οδηγεί στη δημιουργία ενός βουνού, το οποίο στην καθημερινή γλώσσα ονομάζουμε ηφαίστειο. Τα ηφαίστεια μελετά ένας ιδιαίτερος κλάδος της επιστήμης της Γεωλογίας, η Ηφαιστειολογία. Τα ηφαίστεια πάνω στη Γη βρίσκονται συνήθως εκεί όπου δύο ή τρεις τεκτονικές πλάκες συγκρούονται ή απομακρύνονται: Μία μεσοωκεάνεια ράχη ή οροσειρά, όπως στο μέσο του Ατλαντικού Ωκεανού, δίνει παραδείγματα ηφαιστείων από «αποκλίνουσες πλάκες», ενώ ο Ειρηνικός Ωκεανός με το «Δαχτυλίδι της φωτιάς» προσφέρει παραδείγματα ηφαιστείων από «συγκλίνουσες πλάκες». Αντιθέτως, ηφαίστεια δεν δημιουργούνται εκεί όπου δύο τεκτονικές πλάκες κινούνται πλευρικά η μία ως προς την άλλη. Ηφαίστεια μπορούν, επίσης, να σχηματισθούν όπου υπάρχει διάταση του γήινου φλοιού ή όπου ο φλοιός είναι πολύ λεπτός, όπως στην κοιλάδα του Αφρικανικού Ρήγματος. Τέλος, τα ηφαίστεια προκαλούνται πάνω από σημεία στα οποία ο μανδύας της Γης έχει ανοδικά ρεύματα, τα αποκαλούμενα «θερμά σημεία» (hot spots), που μπορεί να βρίσκονται μακριά από τα όρια των τεκτονικών πλακών, όπως είναι τα νησιά της Χαβάης. Τέτοια ηφαίστεια βρίσκονται και σε άλλους πλανήτες ή μεγάλους δορυφόρους στο Ηλιακό Σύστημα.
