Irkutsk is the capital of eastern Siberia and the Baikal region. While the city preserves its unique history, it also looks forward actively to Siberia's future. The Irkut River gave the name to the city, and the shore of the Angara river became a citadel of Russian discoverers in the 17th century. Today, from this cultural and scientific center, there are a lot of interesting routes on the unique railway around Lake Baikal, that includes hundreds of bridges and tunnels along the way. The Taltsy Ethnographic Museum is a delightful experience that reflects the history and culture of the Baikal area. Endless rivers and lakes rich in fish attract fishermen from all over the world. The Republic of Karelia [01:01]
The Republic of Karelia is located in the northwest of Russia. It's a land of a stark, but overwhelming beauty. In the Kalevala district, you can visit villages where well known folk songs were written, and enjoy Kalevala, the famous genre of Karelian-Finnish epic poetry.
