In reality you do start to realize just how large the land mass of Australia really is, so lets take a rain check here, there are 21 million people occupying a space the size of Continental Europe (excluding Russia) or America and Canada combined (excluding Alaska) and most population centres tend to be on the east coast with only Perth as the major hub on the south west coast, Darwin is just a village on the northern tip. To save time I opted to fly into Alice and take a drive south to Adelaide a few days later. Flying over the Simpson desert it was easy to see how the red centre got its name, the sand here is a firery terracotta red, from the air it feels like you have actually left plant Earth and are now in orbit around Mars such is the colour and sheer isolation of this region. So why build a town in the middle of such an arid landscape, well quite simply water is plentiful, it just happens to be in upside down rivers, that is to say the river courses around Alice Springs run underground.
