Visit the Interesting Town of Aleysk

Aleysk is a town in Altai Krai, a region of Russia. Aleysk is approximately 120 kilometers southwest of the city of Barnaul, the administrative center of Altai Krai. Aleysk is situated on the Aley River, which is a tributary of the Ob, a major Russian river. The Ob is formed by the flowing together of the Katun and Biya rivers. Both these rivers originate in the Altay Mountains, a mountain range in central Asia where Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and China touch on eachother’s borders. The population of Aleysk, as registered in 2005, is in the region of 28,700.

Aleysk is close to the former Aleysk Air Base, which is situated six kilometers west of the town. During the 1970s and 1980s, Aleysk Air Base was home to 812th Interceptor Aviation Regiment (812 IAP) and their MiG-23 MLD aircraft. The Aleysk area was also once the base for a division of the Strategic Rocket Forces (SRF) which the 812 IAP had the responsibility of protecting.

Thirty silos for RS-20SS-18 ‘Satan’ ICBMs (Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles) had been situated in the area of Aleysk. These were destroyed in late 2001 to early 2002 under the watchful eye of the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) representatives as well as representatives of the Russian Federation and local authorities. This action, which was taken in order to comply with US/Soviet arms reduction treaties, was met with mixed emotions by many Russians. Although it signalled a huge step forward in reaching mutual objectives, it nevertheless also signalled the deactivation of a Strategic Rocket Force Division that had been in operation for over 41 years and was the closing of a chapter in Russian history. This destruction of weapons was only one of many such operations undertaken throughout Russia.

The Strategic Rocket Forces Aleysk military stronghold area, included housing, a school, kindergartens and a swimming pool, now serves as a base for the 122nd Motor Rifle Division of the Ground Forces for the Siberian Military District.

Resting on the banks of the Aley River, the town of Aleysk in Altai Krai of Russia has certainly found a place in Russian history.
